exchange

In 1880, just after the end of the Civil War, New Haven was home to the first telephone switchboard and exchange. A Broken Umbrella has taken inspiration from this nugget of history and proudly presents its eleventh original work, Exchange

An exploration of the physical as well as the figurative, Exchange is an interactive theatrical experience taking place in different locations across New Haven. One part story gathering, one part performance piece, Exchange has cultivated collaboration in numerous ways.

Watch company members Lou Mangini and Lisa Daly discuss the creation and themes of Exchange with WTNH

Mobile Story Exchange (May – August 2017)

The Mobile Story Exchange debuts this May at ArtWalk in Westville. Give a Story / Get a Story continues in June at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas pop-ups and on the New Haven Green during the Festival.

The Mobile Story Exchange will make additional stops at outdoor events throughout the region from June through August.

Story Collection (February – April 2017)

A Broken Umbrella Theatre will be visiting retirement communities and community groups throughout the Greater New Haven region, recording stories relating to participants’ relationship with the telephone, communication, and personal exchange.

These stories provide the inspiration for, and perhaps become part of, the final production. A number of the collected stories will become part of our Mobile Story Exchange, debuting in May. All collected stories will be archived in the New Haven Story Project.

A Broken Umbrella Theatre has held open salons, readings, and story exchange events beginning in March throughout New Haven.
